Sedation Dentistry in the UAE: Nitrous, Oral, IV, GA — What's Allowed & What It Costs

Sedation is regulated jointly by the DHA (Dubai), DOH (Abu Dhabi), MOH (Sharjah + Northern Emirates) and the SHCC (Sharjah). Only certain sedation types can be delivered in a dental chair; the rest require a hospital environment. ### Tier 1 — Nitrous oxide (‘laughing gas’) Delivered via a nasal hood, mixed with oxygen. Onset 3–5 minutes, offset 5 minutes after the mask comes off. You drive home. Only sedation legally available with just a dental licence in Dubai (Class II GA training required to prescribe). **AED 250–500 per session** added to procedure cost. Best for: mild-moderate anxiety, gag reflex, long procedures. ### Tier 2 — Oral conscious sedation Usually midazolam or triazolam, given 45 minutes before appointment. Patient is drowsy, responds to voice, remembers little. Requires an escort home. **AED 400–800** added to procedure cost. Requires DHA sedation permit for the operator. ### Tier 3 — IV moderate sedation Administered by a DHA/DOH-licensed anaesthetist or dentist-anaesthetist. Titrated to effect — you follow commands but won't remember. Requires monitored recovery room. **AED 1,800–3,500** per hour. Best for: wisdom teeth, multiple implants, patients with severe phobia. ### Tier 4 — General anaesthesia Legally must be delivered in a JCI-accredited hospital OR a licensed day-surgery dental centre with anaesthetist on-site. **AED 4,500–9,000** for a two-hour case in Dubai. Full pediatric rehab AED 12,000+. Best for: children with extensive caries, adults with special needs, complex full-mouth work. ### Choosing responsibly - Ask to see the operator's DHA sedation permit - Confirm rescue kit (flumazenil, naloxone, oxygen) on-site - Any clinic offering ‘conscious sedation’ without an anaesthetist for adult IV work is out of scope ### Insurance angle Daman and AXA cover sedation when medically justified (dental phobia diagnosis, special needs). Cosmetic-adjacent sedation (whitening, veneers) is out of pocket everywhere.
