Dental Lasers in the UAE: What Diode, Er:YAG and CO₂ Lasers Actually Do
Every clinic markets ‘laser dentistry’ but the machines differ enormously. Match the wavelength to the job.
Read this for a UAE city:
Dental lasers fall into three functional families, each with different wavelengths, tissue interactions and clinical applications. Marketing rarely distinguishes them.
### Diode lasers (810 / 940 / 980 / 1064 nm)
Small, portable, cheap. Cut soft tissue only.
- Frenectomies (tongue-tie release in infants)
- Gum contouring around veneers/crowns
- Periodontal pocket disinfection
- Aphthous ulcer relief
Common in most Dubai clinics. Add-on charge AED 200–500 per procedure.
### Er:YAG (2,940 nm) & Er,Cr:YSGG (2,780 nm) — ‘hard tissue’ lasers
Cut both enamel and soft tissue via water absorption. The one many patients think of as ‘no drill dentistry’.
- Class I/II cavity preparation (children love it)
- Soft-tissue procedures
- Implant surface decontamination (peri-implantitis)
- Endodontic irrigation activation
Only premium clinics stock these (DHCC, DIFC, Jumeirah). Waterlase iPlus is the flagship model. Adds AED 400–800 per procedure.
### CO₂ lasers (10,600 nm)
Excellent haemostasis. Used for benign lesion removal, gingivectomies before crown prep, biopsy. Less common in UAE dentistry.
### Real clinical value vs marketing
- **Truly better with laser**: infant frenectomy, gum contouring, periodontal treatment adjunct
- **Comparable but nicer**: cavity prep in cooperative children
- **Overhyped**: root canal treatment (adjunct only, not replacement for mechanical instrumentation)
- **Not better**: routine adult fillings — drill is faster and cheaper
### Safety in UAE clinics
DHA requires laser safety training; ask to see the certificate. Patient and operator both wear wavelength-specific goggles.
### The cost question
Laser add-ons range AED 200–800 per procedure. Insurance rarely covers the surcharge. For infant tongue-tie or peri-implantitis, the clinical benefit justifies it. For adult routine fillings, save the cash.

CBCT Scans in UAE Dentistry: When You Actually Need One (and When You're Being Upsold)
Cone-beam CT is transformative for implants and endodontics — and unnecessary for a simple filling. Here's the honest indication list.
Intraoral Scanners vs Traditional Impressions in the UAE
Putty and alginate are still around — but scanners now dominate any Dubai clinic that does crowns, implants or aligners at scale.
